Leavenworth, Washington. It's a huge destination in Washington, and as I understand, folks from across the country have heard of it. The beautiful theme town is known as Little Bavaria (a popular state in Germany, from which many modern beers are derived). Leavenworth is an architectural and natural marvel. Centered in a deeply cut valley, surrounded by refreshing snowcapped mountains that seem to go straight up, this cozy town is nestled in the center of Washington state.
Every building in the downtown district keeps close eye on its appearance, with old style German designs. Each poses a unique character, beautiful flowers, murals, or some other sparkle that is sure to catch your eye. Throughout the year, the town hosts an abundance of festivals and activities that make you want to come back (even as locals, we can't get enough of it). My favorite time is fall, when the entire mountain side is covered in a vast variety of colors that seem to shout "It's fall, relax and enjoy nature!" Or the month of October, when the city hosts a celebration of Oktoberfest with countless beers, festivities, musicians, and performers. Winter brings Christmas tree lighting that brings wonder to hearts of all ages. Spring and summer offer local farmers markets, dozens of specialty shops, carriage rides, performances, etc.
Sold. You want to visit - so what's the best way to get here?
Well, Leavenworth has many routes by which to travel. All offer a little something special. My favorite ways to get here from Seattle area are by taking one of two highways.
First: Leaving Seattle, get onto I-90 and drive to the Cle Elum junction which connects to Highway 97 and goes over Blewett pass. From there, you will merge onto Highway 2 and travel northwest to Leavenworth. This is a peaceful drive if you simply enjoy a beautiful drive with lots of scenery changes. There are many opportunities along the way - scenic outlooks, shopping outlets, tourist centers, and more. During the green months, I find this to be refreshing and enjoyable.
Alternatively, you may choose the drive over Steven's pass. Once you get out of the Seattle area (Head north on I-5, then take highway 522 East), connect with Highway 2. Once on highway 2, drive east until you get to Leavenworth. This route has some ups and downs (besides the mountain pass). You will pass through several smaller towns - which provides an opportunity to shop, eat, and stretch your legs. It also follows a beautiful river, rocky mountains, and offers breath-taking views of our state. I prefer this route during winter because of the beautiful snow-covered views, but it also means restrictions may be necessary for safety. To be honest, I prefer it largely because there is a candy factory and shop along this route which is open to the public.
These are general directions, so be sure to consult a map and other travel advisory sites such as Washington State DOT. When you do come to visit, plan enough time to take it all in and be sure to enjoy the locally crafted goodies.
